Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st century BC-1st century AD. An agate bead in white and maroon-brown, of tronco-pyramidal shape, both sides furnished with holes for the passage of a leather string or rope, possibly part of a bracelet or small necklace. 1.63 grams, 15mm (3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent. Agate was highly prized in ancient times for its scarcity and beauty. Sourced in Afghanistan, this lovely agate crystal was hand-carved and polished in ancient Persia over 2600 years ago, diffused in all Mediterranean and widely employed by Levantine peoples, Greek and Romans.
