"MONGOLIAN ARCHER" BY A FOLLOWER OF GIUSEPPE CASTIGLIONE, LATE QING China, 1750-1900. Watercolors and ink on paper. Apocryphal signature and two seals to lower left. Note the fine detail to the face of the archer. Condition: Laid down on cardboard. Abrasions, losses, soiling and old touch-ups mostly of small wormholes. Provenance: The collection of Remi Bonnaud, director of a French silk mill in Indochina before 1940, acquired locally and thence by descent in the same family. A notable southern French collection, acquired from the above. Dimensions: 88 x 39 cm (the painting) and 102 x 50 cm (the board). Giuseppe Castiglione, S.J. (Lang Shining, 19 July 1688 - 17 July 1766), was an Italian Jesuit brother and a missionary in China, where he served as an artist at the imperial court of three emperors -Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong. He painted in a style that is a fusion of European and Chinese traditions.
