1930s AD. A dark wood display cabinet with side-hinged single door and six drawers containing an original collection set of 200 rock samples and 96 mineral specimens (of a total of 100 with numbers 29, 54, 94, 109 now missing), each individually boxed and numbered with a corresponding numbered descriptive label from Gregory, Bottley & Co and as retailed by Thomas Murby & Co; accompanied by a later twelve-page manuscript contents list in two-ring binder (prepared by a previous geologist owner from Surrey"). See Cooper, Michael P., Robbing the Sparry Garniture - A 200-Year History of British Mineral Dealers, 2006, pp.144-153 for a history of J. R. Gregory and the firm, founded in 1858. 21.40 kg total, cabinet 48 x 30 x 40cm (19 x 12 x 16"). Ex Dr Ron Bonewitz collection; originally the property of a Scottish geologist from new, thence with a Surrey, UK geologist. The firm operated as Gregory, Bottley & Co from around 1932 from 30 Old Church Street, Chelsea, London and this cabinet and contents were retailed by Thomas Murby & Co of 17 Farringdon Street, London; surviving original Gregory, Bottley & Co manuscript cash books in the possession of TimeLine Auctions Ltd (those volumes dating to the 1930s), show entries for Murby, leading geological publishers and retailers of the period (assets acquired by George Allen & Unwin during the 1940s), as buyers for similar cabinets, complete with sets of specimens (usually in sets of 100 mineral specimens and/or 200 rock samples").
