Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals with various shapes and designs including seven accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-266) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 19 x 20 x 17.5mm. This has a round flat face and flat back on which is mounted a stalk handle ending in a pierced loop. The design, achieved in raised lines, consists of one crescent supported on a straight stroke, two further crescents one to each side of this stroke, and one of these further crescents supports another straight but erratically placed line. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is in good condition save for damage to the outer rim at one point.'; (D-28) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 18 x 17 x 18mm. This has a round flat face and a back which rises to a pierced stalk handle. The design shows a scorpion, cut into the surface of the metal. The seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is in good condition.'; (D-12) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 15 x 15 x 13mm. This is round, with a flat engraved face and a back rising to peak in a pierced loop handle. the face shows a recumbent horned animal. The object was cast when it was made. This comes from west central Asia, and perhaps dates to c.1000-500 B.C. The edge is chipped, but otherwise it is in reasonable condition.'; (T-844) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 24 x 24 x 13mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a stalk handle, with end now broken off. the design on the face is done in raised lines within an outer rim, and consists of three parts: two crescents based on the rim, and a pair of crescents one within the other also based on the rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. There is incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but save for the broken handle it is in good condition.'; (T-425) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 20 x 16mm. This is round with flat face and flat back, on which a handle or angular shape with hole is mounted. The design on the face, which is compartmented, is created from three crescents based on the outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a good example of its kind and is in very good condition.'; (P-28) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20.5 x 19 x 11m. This has a flat round face and a back which rises to a stalk handle, which is broken off and missing. The design consists of a simple cross and the four quarters so created being filled with two inverted Vs and two crescents. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. The rim is worn and the handle missing, but the design, though now under thick incrustation, appears to be well preserved.'; (V-801) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20 x 21 x 15mm. This has a round, flat face and slightly convex back in the centre of which is a stalk handle ending in a suspension loop, now broken. the design, done in raised lines, is a pattern of curving lines, all starting from the edge, the longest with two supporting struts. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. There is corrosion and pressed earth on the surface, which could be removed, but save for the broken loop, it is in good condition.' 80 grams total, 14-24mm (1/2-1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; T-425, T-844, D-12, D-28, U-266, P-28, U-468. V-801, V-740, 4017, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
