Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Early 2nd millennium BC. A limestone cylinder seal with two men facing each other raising an arm in worshipping; between them a caprid(?) standing on the hind legs; behind the left man a big bird, behind the right one a 'scorpion-man' (girtablullû), with a scorpion-scissors as upper body and a human lower body; the representation of the 'scorpion-man' in this shape appears here for the first time and is therefore significant; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. For 'scorpion-people' in the art of the Ancient Near East see Black, J. and Green, A. Gods, Demons and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia. An Illustrated Dictionary, London, 1992, p.161. 2.81 grams, 17mm (3/4"). From a private collection of seals and amulets, the property of a Canadian gentleman living in London; from his father's collection formed in the late 1960s to 1980s. [No Reserve]
