Late 3rd millennium BC-2nd century AD. A mixed group of eleven bronze seals with various shapes and designs, all accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-505) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 18 x 15 x 21mm. This has a flat oval face, and a back which rises to a short stalk handle with rid round it and loop on top. The pattern on the face is like a formée cross supporting a plant motif above it. This comes from west central Asia, but is a rare type not easily dated. Most probably it comes from c. 500 B.C. to 200 A.D. The back is well preserved, but the face is worn so that the design is not fully clear.'; (D-36) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 17 x 17 x 16mm. This has a round flat face with scalloped edge, and a stalk handle on the back which originally was pierced. The design on the face consists of a rosette with nine petals, in compartmented style. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. it is in fair condition.'; (D-26) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 17 x 17.5 x 18mm. This has a round flat face, and the back rises to a loop handle that is pierced. The design on the face is abstract and linear: three lines with incurving ends, and a crescent. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. The handle is worn, otherwise it is in good condition.'; (D-45) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 29 x 28 x 8mm. This is roughly round, with a flat face and back that rises gently to the middle where there is a small loop handle. There is an elaborate engraved design on the face, which is not easy to interpret. It may show a mythical monster of some type. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1000 B.C. It is a rare seal, and in fair condition.'; (D-46) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 22 x 13.5mm. This was no doubt originally round, with flat engraved face and back rising gently to the middle where there is a pierced stalk handle. The design is hard to interpret, but may show two quadruped with heads turned backwards, one above the other. this comes from west central Asia, and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is in fair condition.; B-30 Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 20 x 18mm. This has a flat trefoil face, with the surface hollowed out beyond the rim to create the intaglio. On the back is a piece of round metal attached, pierced to form the handle. The seal comes from the Bronze Age of west central Asia, and probably dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is encrusted, but the metal appears to be in very good condition.; (R-491) Stamp Seal of Bronze, 12 x 12 x 21mm. This has a round flat face and steep sides that rise to a pierced handle on top. The design is linear and consists of three crescents based on an outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1600 B.C. it is in fair condition.; (R-494) Stamp Seal of Bronze, 16 x 16 x 10mm. This is a roughly round piece of sheet metal with a pierced handle of the same material on the back. The design shows an insect with small wings joining the thorax and all pincers etc. spread. This is not a well known piece, but it comes from west central Asia and is certainly ancient. Dating is difficult, but perhaps c. 1000-500 B.C. is the most probable.'; (T-517) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 16 x 15 x 12mm. This has a roughly round flat compartmented face, and a flat back with bevelled edge on which is mounted a handle of inverted-U-shape. The design on the face is a kind of rosette, with central small circle and six 'petals'. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed. The metal beneath could be conserved.'; (V-721) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 19 x 17 x 19 x 12mm. This bears the form of the design, with flat compartmented face and slightly convex back, in the middle of which is a stalk handle with suspension loop on top. The design accentuates the trefoil shape. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a small example of its kind, but a nice example in good condition.'; (U-306) 'Stamp Seal of bronze, 13 x 13 x 25mm. This has a round, flat, compartmented face, and convex back which rises to a stalk handle surmounted with a pierced loop; the design consists of three crescents based on the outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface, which could be removed. Generally the piece is in good condition.' 71 grams total, 16-25mm (3/4-1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers T-517, R-494, R-491, B-30, D-46, D-45, D-26, D-36, U-505, U-306, V-721, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
