2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze brooch (fibula) in the form of a stylised leaping stag, hatched neck turned looking back; iron pin to the reverse. Cf. Hattatt, R. Ancient and Romano-British Brooches, Sherborne, 1982, item 166. 11 grams, 40mm (1 3/4"). From a private collection; formed 1965-1975. Small brooches, often in whimsical animal forms, were worn both by Roman soldiers stationed in the provinces and by the native population. Though brooches in these forms appear throughout the Roman world, the distribution of finds and the archaeological remains of workshops suggest that the major centers of production were Britain and Gaul.
