2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze mount representing Priapus, the fertility god, emerging from a pillar and offering fruits, dressed with a tunic and a cloak (pallium) worn over his head in sacral manner (capite velato), the insertion pin still present, possibly a mount for a staff. Similar to a piece kept inside the British Museum, inventory number: 1814,0704.411. 62 grams, 67mm (2 1/2"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. Images of the god were placed in household shrines as protection for the boundaries of the family's land, in addition to the wellbeing of the crops grown on it and the animals reared there.
