GERVASE SPENCER (BRITISH d. 1763) A pair of portrait miniatures of husband and wife, he wearing lilac coat, white waistcoat stock and lace chemise, hair worn en queue; she wearing white dress trimmed with lace, a pearl choker and earring and a white lace cap on her dark brown hair Both signed with initials GS on the obverse and dated 1754 Watercolour on ivory Set in the original gold frames with pearl borders Ovals, 48 mm (2 in) high, each (2) Provenance: Collection JJ, Sotheby's 15 September, 1933 Exhibited: Comerford Collection at the Irish Architectural Archives, Dublin, 2009 Literature: The Comerford Collection: Portrait Miniatures, (privately published, Dublin, 2009) pp 7, 20 (#43a), 21 (#43b) With old collector's labels on the reverse stating that the miniatures were once in the collection of someone with the initials of JJ and that they appeared at Sotheby's in 1933. It is likely that this pair was commissioned to commemorate the sitter's marriage in or around 1754.
