LOT 467 Monumental Roman Lion. Northern Italy, probably 12th/13th century. 77x204x38 cm. Lying lion made of limestone, fully round. Crouching in a straight posture on a rectangular plinth, head and front legs frontally aligned. With richly falling, flaky mane. Lateral notches as transport brackets. Aged, best. The large reclining lion figures are mainly found in pairs in northern Italy as column supports for the portals of Romanesque churches and cathedrals. Nice comparisons are the lions at the cathedrals of Verona, Modena or Parma. The lion presented here does not show any traces of fastening on its back, so that it was probably not used to support a column or any other architectural element.
