The Flemish battle and hunting painter Peter (also Pieter) Snayers was a pupil of Sebastian Vrancx, who had been working in Antwerp since 1600 and under whose strong influence his early works are. In 1628 he was called to Brussels as court painter and subsequently became the official battle painter of the House of Habsburg. He became famous for his large-scale battle cycles, which he produced for the Spanish court, for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, for Count Bonaventura of Bucquoy and for the Italian general Octavio Piccolomini. He also worked with Peter Paul Rubens on numerous projects. His most important pupil was Franz Adam van der Meulen, his successors are Pieter Meulener and Simon Johannes van Douw.
