LOT 703 Folding conostasis (travel egg conostasis). Russia, late 19th century. 52 x 140 cm. Folding conostasis with fifteen individual panels connected by hinges with an ogival upper end. The central panel with a double-arched end shows the royal door with the four evangelists in the lower section, and the Annunciation and the Last Supper in the round-arched field above. The two picture fields above show the two high feasts of the crucifixion and the descent into hell of Christ. At the upper edge of the picture the Mother of God of the sign flanked by the Old Testament kings David and Solomon. The painting of each of the seven panels on the left and right of the central panel follows a symmetrical structure with five registers on top of each other. The prophets of the Old Testament are depicted from top to bottom, followed by two registers with the representation of male and female saints. The following register shows the high festivals of the Orthodox Church year. In the lower register the Mother of God and John the Precursor flanked by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel as well as Church Fathers and Hierarchs. Provenance: From a European royal house. Inherited in the family since the time of origin.
