William Underhill, British act 1848-1871- Hagar and Ishmael; oil on canvas, bears inscribed label attached to the stretcher, 128x101.5cm canvas relined, early/mid 20th century. on wooden stretcher, appears to be original. paint surface has been partially cleaned. re-varnished, possibly with a matt varnish. flake loss to front shoulder, and to front underarm. under UV lamp inspection: cleaning has removed varnish, predominantly to the sky and figures, and some remaining older layers of varnish remain on the drapery and foreground - gives an overall uneven feel; light retouching and shadow heightening to the hair, faces and flesh; spots of retouching in places to the clouds; retouching to frame rubs in places, particularly to the right side; patch of old retouching under the varnish to the right side, within the drapery to the right side, and to the foreground and rock to the upper left. overall appears in reasonable condition. framed, in a gilded composition Neoclassical style frame, late 20th century. frame appears in good condition.
