男，1960年生于云南省昆明市，1985年毕业于云南艺术学院 ，他以开放的态度广泛采用各种手段，以跨领域的方式呈现出90年代中国艺术的所面临的问题。1993年，他因”寻人启事”一举成名。此后的“此人出售”，“生活方式”，“身份证”，“让朱发东同志先走”，以及之后的羊皮纸系列作品，VISA系列等作品，使他受到中国及国际艺术界的广泛关注，成为中国最重要的当代艺术家之一。
