Franz Michael von Purgau, 1677/78 – um 1751, zug.
FOREST FLOOR LIFE WITH THISTLE, INSECTS, A SNAIL AND A FROG
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
49.5 x 38 cm.
In decorative frame.
Dr. Fred G. Meijer is to be thanked for kind remarks.
In front of a brown rocky background, on a forest ground overgrown with moss a large spiny thistle rising up. To its left small blooming meadow flowers, including a daisy. Numerous insects populate the picture, among them bright, yellow-white and reddish butterflies and moths, a dragonfly on the right side of the picture, various beetles crawling on the ground, a caterpillar on the moss and a snail. In the lower left corner a small sitting green frog. Painting in predominantly beige-brown colouring, corresponding to that of a darker forest floor, brightened up by the numerous colourful insects that fly across the picture or have settled on small branches or leaves. A typical painting for the artist. (1222111) (18)
