Italienischer Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts
HEILIGER ROCHUS
oil on canvas.
121,5x 94,5 cm.
Three-quarter portrait of the saint in front of a dark background with stone wall in light sitting posture. His head, partly shaded and surrounded by a nimbus, he has turned upwards and looks with his dark eyes to the sky. He wears a light brown robe and with his right hand he has pulled it up so that his left leg and the plague wound on his thigh are visible, with which, according to legend, he infected himself. In his left hand he holds a pilgrim's staff and on his short dark green cloak he has attached a pilgrim's baptismal font of St. James. On the ground on the right side of the picture, there is also a small dog with a piece of bread in its mouth, which, according to legend, saved the saint from starvation in his solitude. Painting in a strong light-dark manner, in which the face and the wound shown are particularly emphasized by the light guidance. Minor retouching. (1220563) (18)
