MADONNA WITH THE CHILD AND THE JOHANNESKNABEN IN LANDSCAPE
Oil on wood.
58 x 47 cm.
In gilded aedicular frame.
Assigned to the painter by expertise of Emilio Negro, Bologna, after comparisons with various painters in question. The expertise confirms the age of the painting and its stylistic affiliation to the Tuscan-Roman area. Comparative examples of the same subject are also given, such as works in the churches of Sant'Andrea Fano (Pinacoteca Civica) or in the Museo Diocesano Albani in Urbino.
Mary is depicted in a half-length figure, seated slightly to the right, on the lap of the Boy Jesus, who turns to the little John boy on the left and puts his hand on his shoulder, while the boy holds a lamb between his knees. Clear colour emphasis of the strong red colour in Mary's dress with the muted blue coat over it. Particularly striking is the eye contact of Mary with the viewer, while the Child Jesus turns to the boy John, who in turn looks up at the head of Mary. This introduces an inconspicuous movement to the calm overall representation. Iconographically, the landscape background is assigned to each of the figures: the stony, wooded background above the figure of St. John points to his later work, while on the right the city with its towers is supposed to refer to the reign of Christ. The painting is in good condition. Rest., erg. (12209210) (2) (11)
