Italo Flämische Schule des 17. Jahrhunderts
DER TRUNKENE SILEN
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
107 x 123 cm.
In decorative gilded frame.
In the centre of the picture, in open landscape, the almost naked, drunken Silen, the wise but drunken educator of Dionysus, who can no longer keep himself on his legs and has to support himself with his big strong arms on the left and right. He has placed his left arm over a goat-legged satyr and in his hand he is still holding a jug from which wine is flowing; his other hand is resting on the light upper body of a young goat-legged woman, while in the background another woman is looking out of the picture, in front of a light blue sky with white cloud formations. On the right-hand side of the picture, another man in dark clothing can also be seen, looking down in horror at what is happening. Minor retouching.
Note:
One of the most famous paintings of the drunken Silen is by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and is now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. (1220942) (18)
