Description

A rare Berlin faience orange planter with the coat of arms of the von Morenthal family Large, bell-shaped vessel with a flaring rim and scroll handles resting on a stepped base. Decorated on both sides with a large crowned coat of arms flanked by palm fronds. Unmarked, pierced base. The corpus restored, minor rim chips. H 38.3, W with handles ca. 40.5 cm. Manufactory of Gerhard Wolbeer, circa 1705. Provenance Acquired in 2004 from Johannes Vogt. Lower Saxon private collection. Literature An identical orange planter from the collection of Dr. Heiland in: v. Falke, Altberliner Fayencen, Berlin 1923, illus. 9a. Two of these planters are also housed in the Stadtmuseum Berlin (inv. no. II 72, 301B a/b), published in cat.: Barock-Fayencen. Kurmärkische Manufakturen, Berlin 1994, no. 26. Cf. cat. Herrliche Künste und Manufacturen, Berlin 2001, no. 30. Seltener Orangenkübel mit dem Wappen der Familie von Morenthal Fayence, Blaudekor, Mangan, Orangegelb und Eisenrot. Wuchtige Pokalform auf gestuftem Fuß, abgesetzter und konvexer Lippenrand, zwei Doppelvoluten als Henkel. Auf beiden Wandungsseiten das viergeteilte Wappen unter einer Krone zwischen Palmwedeln. Ohne Marke, gelochter Boden. Korpus restauriert, geringe Randchips. H 38,3, mit Henkeln B ca. 40,5 cm. Berlin, Manufaktur Gerhard Wolbeer, um 1705. Provenienz 2004 bei Johannes Vogt erworben.
