23rd-20th century BC. A bronze discoid seal with seven figure-of-eights to the rim, to the centre two waved lines, an s-shaped line, two oval shapes and a circular shape with a tail; applied strap handle with scroll detailing to the reverse, accompanied by a typed and signed note by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 67 x 66 x 20mm. This is round, with flat compartmented face and flat back, with scalloped edges. on the back is mounted a handle of sheet metal decorated with diagonal cuts between grooves. The design consists of a central snake with curling body and around it four other creatures with big heads and short tails (some damaged"). The whole is surrounded by a band of pairs of joined ovals. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design and the seal is large. There is a little damage, but the metal is in good condition.' 111 grams, 67mm (2 3/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection number W-146, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
