A bronze great square-headed brooch of Hines's Group XVI comprising a rectangular headplate with lugs to the upper corners and edge, central barred block with ropework panels around and raised borders, ribbed bow, lozengiform footplate with beast-head lappets flanking the end of the bow, vertical midrib with ropework bands and discoid lobe; ferrous accretion to the reverse (remains of pin"). Cf. Hines, J., A New Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Great Square-Headed Brooches, London, 1997, plate 51a. 77.1 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the 1970s. The brooch shares many strikingly similar features with the find from grave 64 at Bergh Apton, Norfolk.
