1250-1275 AD. A finely illuminated leaf from an early Medieval portable Bible, executed on both sides with two columns of 42-44 lines in in black ink in a small Latin gothic script on fine animal vellum; rubricated initials and marginalia in red and blue. 2.2 grams, 19.3 x 13.5 cm (7 1/2 x 5 1/4"). From the property of a London gentleman; formerly in a UK collection, acquired from Christie’s, from a Bible sold with later covers, initials removed or destroyed, pages missing or destroyed and other damage; too irretrievable to be repaired and subsequently split. In contrast to those produced more commonly in France, pocket Bibles produced in England in the 13th-century often, as in this example, omitted the Book of Psalms.
