500 BC-500 AD. A carved shell panel with notched edges and drilled hole representing a beast-head with notched mane; mounted on a custom-made stand. See Valdez and Veintimilla, Amerindian Signs, 5000 years of Pre Columbian art in Ecuador, Quito, 1992, for examples of the type. 128 grams total, 12cm with stand (4 3/4"). Property of a Brussels gallery; acquired on the European art market. Highly polished pendants were produced in Ecuador and represent a variety of animals. The current examples appear to depict fish.
