太湖石，形制硕大，随形状，犹如洞岩般造型，下承木座，极具观赏性。表面起伏不平，色泽青黑，深浅不一，韵味十足，富于灵性。太湖石，又名窟窿石、假山石，是种石灰岩，多为灰色，少见白色、黑色，尤以黄色更为稀少。石灰岩长期受波浪冲击以及含有二氧化碳的水溶蚀，在漫长岁月里，逐步形成大自然精雕细琢、曲折圆润的太湖石。为典型的传统供石，以造型取胜，尤以能够体现「瘦、皱、漏、透」之美，是其主要审美特征，多玲珑剔透、重峦迭嶂之姿，宜作园林石等观赏用石。
