Exhibited 19th C. Russian "Month" Icon for October. Tempera, gold leaf on wood. This is one of a series of twelve icons that marked each month of the year. It depicts saints and festivals celebrated during the month of October. Among them are the "Protection (Pokrov) of the Mother of God" and the "Seven Sleepers of Ephesus." Painters' manuals such as the Stroganov Icon Painting Manual listed the saints and festivals for each day and showed how they were to be painted. Size: 14 x 12.25 in.
