A Regency mahogany mercury cistern tube marine stick barometer John Augustus, Falmouth, circa 1820 With brass suspension ring above hinged rectangular door enclosing canted silvered vernier register plates annotated with the usual observations and signed John Augustus, Falmouth to lower left hand corner, the inside of the door applied with mercury centigrade thermometer, the rectangular section trunk with brass-sleeved gimbal pivot holes to the slightly bowed sides above stepped moulded cylindrical lacquered brass cistern cover with brass level adjustment screw to underside, (gimbals lacking), 95cm (33.5ins) high. John Anthony Augustus is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as a mathematical instrument maker who worked from Church Street, Falmouth, circa 1815-35.
