An English brass portable universal inclining compass sundial Unsigned, early 19th century The recessed silvered compass centre with radial lines engraved with annotations for the four cardinal points and subdivisions for NE, SE, SW and NW within outer scale divided to two-degrees and annotated for every ten degrees, within circular surround fitted with hinged open hour circle pivoting against folding curved latitude scale and engraved in reverse III-XII-VIII with stylised wheatear half hour markers, the centre with pivoted gnomon over arched scroll engraved spring plate, (compass needle and glass cover lacking), 7.5cm (3ins) wide. The current lot is of a type made in London from the second half of the 18th century (see Cowham, Mike, A DIAL IN YOUR POKE page 96).
