David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Train Robbery" Signed and dated ('82) lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "Train Robbery" published in 1983. Butch Cassidy ... the Sundance Kid ... Kid Curry ... and other notorious Wild West bandits made up the infamous Wild Bunch -- a loose-knit gang that operated from such outlaw strongholds as the Hole in the Wall, Brown's Hole, and Robber's Roost from 1896 to 1901. Although the core of this gang probably never exceeded ten riders at any one time, it is quite likely that more than a hundred outlaws spent brief periods as "Bunchers" during the gang's five years of existence. However, even though the membership may have fluctuated, the leadership of the Wild Bunch remained within the firm grasp of the legendary Butch Cassidy ... a friendly-looking ex-cowhand whose authority was enforced by one of the fastest guns in the West, the Sundance Kid. It was said that the Sundance Kid was so fast, that he could draw a gun "quicker than a snake could flick its tongue." With the speed of "the Kid's" gun, the wily leadership of Butch Cassidy, the dedication of the other riders, and the gang's impossible-to-find hideouts ... the Wild Bunch became one of the most successful gangs of train robbers in the history of the Wild West. Perhaps their most noteworthy train robbery occurred on June 2, 1899 in Wilcox, Wyoming -- near present-day Laramie. It is reported that the Wild Bunch successfully made off with a bounty of nearly $48,000 on that job alone ... truly a considerable sum of money in those days. Size: 18 x 21 in. Unframed.
