Muromachi period (1333-1573), 15th/16th century Carved primarily from a single block of cypress wood and decorated with polychrome pigments over gesso, the mythical bird with a prominent brow above pierced eyes, a wattle emanating from pierced nostrils, a jewel held in the tip of the beak, the expansive forehead finished with an elaborated comb and pierced on the surface to hold applied strands of hair (now lost), the interior well worn with use, on later metal stand 15 1/2in (39.4cm) high (mask only); 20 3/4in (52.7cm) high overall
