A Louis XIV Aubusson historical tapestry with Dido and Aeneas resting, last quarter 17th century, possibly after the designs by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli (Italian 1610-1662), depicting the lovers in a verdant landscape, the borders woven with acanthus overall, the top border centred by a Baronial coat of arms, 264 by 218cm This tapestry may depict an episode from the story of Dido and Aeneas, one of the tales from Ovid's Heroides, which revolved around legendary historical and mythological women and was a popular subject for tapestry weavers in France and Flanders alike. A tapestry depicting this composition is in the collection of the Museo Piersanta, Matelica, Italy. That series is said to follow Romanelli's influential cartoons, which were most notably used for tapestries by the Flemish workshop of Michiel Wauters. A circa 1660 Aubusson tapestry of similar design in reverse is in the collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague.
