Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st-2nd century AD. A hollow-formed bronze figure of the goddess Cybele seated on a low throne with a pomegranate in her right hand, left hand resting on the head of a lion. Cf. similar figure in marble in the Getty Museum, New York. 1 kg, 15.5cm (6"). Ex property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1980. Cybele (Kubele) was the Phrygian goddess of mountains and fertility with a strong element of mysticism in her cult. Her Greek cult was mixed with that of Gaia while among the Romans she became confused with Magna Mater (the Great Mother"). [A video of this lot is available on TimeLine Auctions website]
