An early 20th century Iraqi unmarked silver spice box (besamim) circa 1920 Judaica – with two hinged lidded fluted, boxes one with drill pierced holes above sprung leaves affixed to a leaf shape plate raised on three feet with engraved floral decoration. Length – 24.5 cm / 9.75 inches Weight – 657 grams / 21.12 ozt These spice boxes were used in the weekly Jewish ceremony of Havdalah, marking the conclusion of Shabbat (the Sabbath). Produced by Iraqi Jewish silversmiths immidating the Ottoman examples, the pierced box was used as an incense burner.
