A book by Marx Treitzsauerwein, "Der Weiß Kunig. Eine Erzehlung von den Thaten Kaiser Maximilian des Ersten." Vienna, Kurzböck, 1775 The Weißkunig was originally planned as a complete work, together with the Theuerdank, with the aim of glorifying the heroic deeds and courage of the Kaiser. Most of the contents were written by Maximilian himself and edited by Marx Treitzsauerwein. It begins with the history of the Kaiser's ancestors, describes his birth and upbringing, his wedding to Mary of Burgundy (the Theurdank specifically goes into great detail on this subject) and finally honours his war exploits, from the French war of 1478 up to the Italian and French wars of 1513. The victory over the Turks was to be the grand finale; however, Maximilian died beforehand. The work was therefore never published. The handwritten original passed to Treitzsauerwein's heirs and the printing blocks of the woodcuts disappeared. When they came to light 200 years later, the first edition was finally published in Vienna in 1775. (Tr.) Virtually every representational aspect occurring at that time is reflected here in the graphic illustrations: the spheres of the court, society, military life, the bourgeoisie and the craftsmen, all with their various, distinct settings" (Burkhard, Burgkmair, 105). Of the 237 full-page woodcuts, 117 are by Hans Burgkmair the Elder, most of the remainder by Leonhard Beck, with a few by Hans Schäufelin and Hans Springinklee. Folio (35 x 25 cm), 8 leaves, 307 pages, 1 leaf. Contemporary leather binding with a label and gilding on the spine, slightly rubbed, somewhat scuffed. The paper slightly discoloured, minor staining in places. Some of the plates heavily darkened and spotted with mould. First edition. Comes with the list of instructions for the bookbinder that is rarely included, (tr.) "The order of the figures" at the end. Overall in excellent, unfaded condition, the vivid woodcuts still clearly imprinted throughout, in a handsome, 18th century cover. Wien, Kurzböck, 1775 Der Weißkunig war ursprünglich als einheitliches Werk, zusammen mit dem Theurdank geplant, um die Heldentaten und Tapferkeit des Kaisers zu verherrlichen. Der Inhalt stammt weitgehend von Maximilian selbst und wurde von Marx Treitzsauerwein redigiert. Es beginnt mit der Geschichte der Vorfahren des Kaisers, beschreibt seine Geburt und Erziehung sowie seine Vermählung mit Maria von Burgund (speziell dazu sehr detailreich der Theurdank) und schließlich seine Heldentaten in den Kriegen, vom französischen Krieg 1478 bis zu den italienisch-französischen Kriegen von 1513. Überragender Abschluss sollte der Sieg über die Türken sein, doch starb Maximilian vorher. Das Werk wurde daher nicht aufgelegt, das handschriftliche Original ging an die Erben von Treitzsauerwein, die Druckstöcke der Holzschnitte verschwanden. Nach ihrer Wiederentdeckung 200 Jahre später erfolgte endlich die Erstausgabe 1775 in Wien. "Es gibt in der deutschen Graphik des 16. Jhdts. kein zweites Werk, in dem rein stofflich eine ähnliche Vielfältigkeit des Illustrativen zutage tritt. So ziemlich alles, was im Darstellungsbereich der damaligen Zeit gelegen ist, hat hier seinen zeichnerischen Niederschlag gefunden: das höfische, gesellschaftliche, militärische und bürgerlich-handwerkliche Leben mit seinen verschiedenen Schauplätzen" (Burkhard, Burgkmair, 105). Von den 237 ganzseitigen Holzschnitten stammen 117 von Hans Burgkmair d.Ä., die Mehrzahl der übrigen von Leonhard Beck, einige wenige von Hans Schäufelin und Hans Springinklee. Folio (35 x 25 cm), 8 Bl., 307 S., 1 Bl. Leder der Zeit mit Rückenschild und Rückenvergoldung, leicht beschabt, etwas bestoßen. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt, teils gering fleckig. Die Tafeln teils stärker gebräunt und stockfleckig. Erste Auflage. Mit dem meist fehlenden Weisungsblatt an den Buchbinder "Ordnung der Figuren" am Schluss. Insgesamt in sehr guter, frischer Erhaltung mit durchwegs kräftigen Abdrücken der lebhaften Holzschnitte, in einem attraktiven Einband des 18. Jhdts. Zustand: I - II Zustand: I - II
