Attributed to Jan Baptiste de Jonghe, Flemish 1785-1844- Wooded landscapes with figures, cattle, cottages and distant hills; oils on canvas, a pair, 24.3x32.2cm., ea., (2) Provenance: Collection of James West, according to the label attached to the reverse of each Note: Painter, draughtsman, etcher and lithographer, Jan Baptiste de Jonghe was predominantly known for Romantic landscapes and city views influenced by Dutch Golden Age painting. De Jonghe sometimes collaborated with Eugene Joseph Verboeckhoven (Flemish 1798-1881) who provided the staffage. Verboeckhoven was an accomplished painter of animals and - given the evident quality of the cattle and figures - it seems possible that he was directly involved in these compositions. One of the canvases carries a stamp reading ‘Belot, 3, Rue de L’Abre-Sec’, an art materials supplier in Paris, which can be accurately dated from its design to between 1806-24.
