Blue and White Lotus-mouth Bottle Vase, China, possibly 18th century, elongated pear-shape, resting on a slightly splayed foot, the mouth in the shape of a lotus seedpod, encircled with nine petals, the long slender neck with a raised ring in the center above a band of wave design, two animal masks applied on the shoulder, the body with allover lotus scroll design executed in "heap and pile" style above a band of lotus lappet, six-character Yongzheng mark in underglaze blue in a double ring on base, ht. 13 1/2 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of the current consignor through Ward Thoron (1867-1937), the paternal grandfather of the current consignor. Ward Thoron has family ties not only to the Endicott and Peabody families (prominent in New England, the latter with well-established links to overseas trade), but also William Ward a leading shipmaster and merchant who sailed extensively throughout Europe and Asia before settling in Medford, Massachusetts.
