4th-3rd century BC. A Hellenistic terracotta protome depicting the head of a kore, with a prominent nose and enigmatic smile; wearing a veil and earrings. See Goldman, H. and Jones, F., Terracottas from the Necropolis of Halae, Hesperia 11, 1942. 224 grams, 14.7cm (5 3/4"). Property of a Cambridgeshire gentleman; previously in the O'Donavon collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, 1980s-1990s. Comparable protomai were excavated from the graves at Halae by the pioneering Dr. Hetty Goldman (1881-1972) between 1911 and 1916; this item is probably a contemporary of those pieces. [No Reserve]
