Description
Translation provided by Youdao
3rd-4th century AD. A black glass gemstone with intaglio scene of a nude male grasping the arm of a standing figure with stake supporting his head(?), set into a later silver finger ring. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 219, for type. 3.69 grams, 22.89mm overall, 20.95mm internal diameter (approximate size British P, USA 7 1/2, Europe 16.23, Japan 15) (3/4"). From the private collection of Edward Lucie-Smith, an English writer, poet, art critic, curator and broadcaster; the collection formed since the 1990s. The image may relate to the notion of Mercury acting as psychopomp, leading the soul of the dead into the afterlife. [No Reserve]
