1st-2nd century AD. A fine pair of glass knucklebones, astragaloi, highly iridescent, bone-shaped. See Marquardt, J., Privatleben der Römer, Leipzig, 1879, pp.839 ff. 8.03 grams total, 19-20mm (3/4"). From a private Mayfair, London, UK, collection, in the 1970s. The game, actually called knucklebones, is the ancestor of modern Jacks. According to Sophocles, it was was invented by Palamedes, who taught it to Greek soldiers fighting in the Trojan War, although it probably came from Asia originally. The Romans also played knucklebones, and Roman soldiers brought the game to other countries. [2, No Reserve]
