Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st-3rd century AD. A bronze mount or lid, formed as a throne with winged sphinx arm-rests and feet, on a circular base with partial pierced lug to the rear. Cf. Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, for similar category of appliques, although different in shape, items 380,385,389. 27.2 grams, 28mm (1"). Property of a Dutch gentleman; formerly in an old collection formed in the 1970s. The modern word throne derived from the ancient Greek thronos (Greek singular: ??????), which was a seat designated for deities or individuals of high status or honour. The colossal chryselephantine statue of Zeus at Olympia, constructed by Phidias and lost in antiquity, featured the god Zeus seated on an elaborate throne, which was decorated with gold, precious stones, ebony and ivory, according to Pausanias. Mounts like our specimen were used for furniture including beds and caskets. [No Reserve]
