Description
Translation provided by Youdao
4th century AD. A bronze figure of a watchdog, seated, head turned to the right, ears pricked up, eyes protruding, the base bell-shaped, probably for a guard dog of cattle. Cf. Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 259, for similar figure; Clarke, D.V., ‘Four Roman bells from Scotland’ in Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland 103 (1971), pp.228-31. 58 grams, 58mm (2 1/4"). From a private collection formed in the Netherlands; previously in a European collection formed prior to 1980. Bells (tintinnabula) were wind-chimes to be hung out in the garden or courtyard, making a pleasant tinkling noise as they blew in the breeze. However, they also functioned as apotropaic charms against the ‘evil-eye’.
