3rd century AD. A statuette of an advancing naked dwarf with disproportionate body and legs, holding a patera with food in his right extended hand, and a wine amphora on his shoulder. Cf. Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, items 190 and 192ff, for typology. 35.8 grams, 44mm (1 3/4"). From a private collection formed in the Netherlands; previously in a European collection formed prior to 1980. These caricatured figures belong to a group of Alexandrian origin representing dwarfs, slaves, priests and even the Emperor Caracalla represented in grotesque way.
