1st-3rd century AD. A hollow-formed bronze mount in the form of a wolf's head with sorrowful expression, open mouth with exposed canines, ears bent back, fur detailing to the neck, probably intended as a furniture mount. Cf. Menzel, H., Römische Bronzen in Speyer, Maiinz, 1960; and Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 413. 105 grams, 50mm (2"). Property of a Bristol collector; formerly part of his father's collection formed between 1960-late 1970s. The Roman artists loved the invigorating figurative element and thus the variety is shown by the mouldings used on devices such as the key handles or the furniture appliques; dogs, wolves and lions' heads are the most common. The She-Wolf was the mythological animal feeding the Rome founders Romulus and Remus.
