Description
Translation provided by Youdao
3rd century AD. A silver ring with irregular ellipsoid hoop made of a thin band with rectangular cross section, widening and thickened towards the conical shoulders, the hoop below the shoulders decorated with incised volutes, cut along a contour, ellipsoid shield with the inscription VICTRIX. Cf. Henkel, F., Die Römischen Fingerringe der Rheinlande und der Benachbarten Gebiete, Berlin, 1913; Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 184, for type. 10.29 grams, 26.31mm overall, 20.20mm internal diameter (approximate size British S, USA 9, Europe 20, Japan 19) (1"). Property of a London gentleman; from his private collection formed before 2000. The honorific title VICTRIX was usually reserved to a Legion, being many the Roman legions which could boast of this name, like the Legio VI VICTRIX or the Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix, It is most probable, therefore, that this is a legionary ring, used by a miles (soldier legionary) of such legions. [No Reserve]
