1st-2nd century AD. A bronze mount shaped as a female theatre mask, the face beautiful detailed, inlaid eyes, the high propoloma decorated with horizontal bands, the hair regularly arranged in an ordered frame around the face; most probably a furniture appliqué. Cf. Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 354 for similar bronze mask applique. 28.9 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). Property of a London gentleman; from his private collection formed before 2000. Colourful and expressive masks were a hallmark of Roman theatre, developing under Greek influence.
