3rd century AD. A silver finger ring with rounded polygonal hoop made of a band rounded on the outside, widening towards the shoulders, from where a deep flute makes it similar to a double hoop, with split lozenge bezel, inscribed 'AVE / SABINA'. See Henkel, F., Die Römischen Fingerringe der Rheinlande und der Benachbarten Gebiete, Berlin, 1913; Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 213, for type 3.63 grams, 19.81mm overall, 14.47x16.95mm internal diameter (approximate size British H 1/2, USA 4, Europe 6.81, Japan 6) (3/4"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980. The name Sabina was borne by a number of notable females, including Vibia Sabina a cousin of the Emperor Hadrian. The kind of ring belongs to the variant 2 of type V from Ruseva Slokovska classification, and can be compared with the more precious one of the Nikolaevo treasure, allowing to propose a 3rd century AD dating.
