Later 3rd millennium BC. A bronze discoid stamp seal with openwork design, loop handle; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 48 x 48 x 19 mm. This is round with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle with inverted U-shape. The design is compartmented and partly open-work, with engraved detail of the design on the back. It shows a running hare with dog or fox bending its head around to bite the back of the hare. The design is put within an outer rim, and the back adds four trefoils to fill space adjacent to the rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has a rare design and is in fair condition. The outer rim is dented and damaged, but the engraving on the back is well preserved and has been conserved.' 36 grams, 48mm (2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection number R-843; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
