Zsolnay, a good Eosin glazed ceramic vase with twin elephant-head handles and stylised fish decoration c.1905, raised Zsolnay circular spire mark, impressed 6353 M Possibly designed by Nagy Mihály (1864-1943), the shaped vase decorated with stylised leaping fish amidst waves, applied with elephant head handles, their trunks extending down the sides, decorated in red and cream and a lustrous Eosin glaze 36.5 cm high Literature: Eva Csenkey, ‘Zsolnay Szecessziós Kerámiák’, Helikon, Budapest, 1992, p.123, image 151 (a jardinière of horizontal form modelled at either end with elephant heads by Nagy Mihály is illustrated) Some scratches on the sides , some areas of dirt and some small elements of glaze shrinkage on the decoration and base edge. A few abrasions to the elephant trunks - more on the green/gold one. Some fine marks to the clay beneath the glaze and some streaking to the colours in places. Some abrasions to the neck rim that have removed the top surface of the glaze in small areas. The elephant heads have fired differently one is more green gold the other more green bronze. Inside there is a firing flaw to the hole where the elephant handle was attached - for firing. The base rim on underside has wear. There is crazing to the glaze. Overall this vase is in good condition and presents well. Please ask department for photographs.
