Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "Superpowers Proclaim Era of Detente". Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Signed lower right. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century Series 60c Superpowers Proclaim Era of Detente stamp issued November 15, 1999. "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds . . ." lamented American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, recalling the explosion of the first atomic bomb in New Mexico on July 16, 1945. Within a few weeks, the horror of nuclear devastation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki would thrust the world into the age of nuclear weapons. As the United States and the Soviet Union began developing advanced nuclear weapons, a cold war ensued between the two nations that demanded intense diplomatic maneuvering on both sides. In May 1972, President Richard Nixon met in Moscow with Leonid Brezhnev, general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party for the USSR, for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT). Treaties were signed the following October. The d?tente between the two nations was profoundly symbolized in June 1975, with the Soyuz/Apollo Test Project. Image Size: 9.75 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 13 x 20 in. Unframed. (B16569 / B16570)
