Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Maine Coon and Burmese Cats" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Maine Coon and Burmese Cats stamp issued February 5, 1988. If one were not watching closely enough, it might be possible to mistake the Maine Coon Cat for a raccoon. In fact, its patterns and colors are so similar to those of a raccoon in many cases, that some people have speculated on the interbreeding of the two. Most commonly found in the state of Maine, this cat may reach a weight of 40 pounds, and looks even bigger because of the bulk of its fur, especially around the neck. It is thought to have arrived in the New World early on, most probably having been brought aboard a Scandinavian fishing or trading vessel. Because of its size and hardiness, the Coon Cat became a favorite working cat, employed as a mouser in many parts of the state. Also shown is the Burmese Cat. A member of the shorthair breeds, this almond-eyed beauty resembles a Siamese Cat, but is not as slim. Its sleek, sable-brown coat gives it an even more exotic claim. The Burmese breed is calmer and more complacent than the Siamese to which it is so often compared, and its intelligence and affectionate disposition have made it a special favorite among American cat owners. From the sturdiness of the Coon to the elegance of the Burmese, American cats have captured the hearts of Americans. As work hands, they are valued, as pets, they are pampered, and as friends, they are sublime. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 22.25 x 20.25 in. Unframed. (B11368)
