Howard Koslow (1924-2016) "Let's Visit Micronesia" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Federated States of Micronesia 25c Compact of Free Association stamp issued September 28, 1990. From the land to the sea and back to the land, the preparation of breadfruit is one of the traditions of the Pacific Islands. The making of bwiro, preserved breadfruit, is a tradition and is an extensive process. Once the fruit has been harvested, peeled and soaked in the sea, it is allowed to dry on the shore for two days. Then the fruit is kneaded into a doughy mass, squeezed in the hands and rolled into a paste on a flat surface. Sprinkled wiht freshwater and stirred once a day for three days, the dough is then placed into a pit lined with the leaves of the breadfruit tree. With careful attention, this pit can preserve the bwiro for as much as two years. As needed, portions are taken out to be cooked in a variety of recipes. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.75 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B12510)
